Making space for what nourishes you.
Self-care can easily become another list of things we should be doing.
Exercise.
Eat well.
Sleep more.
Practise mindfulness.
Take time for yourself.
All of these things can be useful, but wellbeing isn’t only about managing ourselves better.
There is also pleasure, play, connection and joy.
Sometimes the smallest moments can make a difference.
Notice what brings you alive
Think about something that gives you pleasure.
It might be music, being outdoors, cooking, gardening, dancing, reading, talking to a friend, making something, watching the birds, or simply sitting somewhere you enjoy.
What happens in your body when you think about it?
Perhaps you smile.
Your breathing changes.
You feel lighter.
You feel more energetic.
Or perhaps you simply notice a quiet sense of appreciation.
Look for the small things
You don’t need to organise a special day or make a big change.
Instead, see if you can notice small moments that feel good.
The first cup of tea in the morning.
Sunlight through a window.
A favourite song.
A conversation that makes you laugh.
The feeling of fresh air.
Moving your body in a way that feels good.
A few minutes doing something simply because you enjoy it.
Make room for joy
When you notice something that brings you pleasure, see if you can allow yourself to stay with it for a little longer.
You don’t have to justify it.
You don’t have to make it productive.
It is enough that it feels good.
You might even ask yourself:
What could I make a little more room for?
Reflection
- What brings me pleasure?
- When did I last do something simply because I enjoyed it?
- Do I give myself permission to experience joy without needing a reason?
- What small moment of pleasure could I make space for today?
Self-care isn’t only about looking after what is difficult. It is also about making room for what nourishes us.
